It’s time to put away your puppies and bubble wrap. Exams are around the corner.
Everyone who’s anyone knows it’s time to prepare for this important exam. But we aren’t talking about energy drinks, 2am bedtimes and last minute cramming, because we have done some serious investigating and have collected some of the finest study tips and tricks that you can use to get those straight A’s your parents keep hounding you about.
Take a deep breath.
Turns out that this cliché is more than just something you say to someone before they combust. Breathing and emotions are – on a psychological level – closely connected. Different breathing patterns tie in with different emotions. For example, when you are angry, you tend to take deeper and more exaggerated breaths to try and calm yourself down.
Eat dark chocolate.
Eating dark chocolate boosts your mood, calms your nervous system and improves memory and focus.
Listen to Beethoven’s beats.
Classical music stimulates the brain the way no other genre can. Studies by Dr. Gordon Shaw suggest that it warms up the part of the brain involved in abstract thought.
Put the energy drinks away.
Not only are they bad for you but they don’t exactly help with your concentration either. Instead of drinking energy drinks, go for a run to get the blood flowing as it provides you with a natural source of energy or drink an ice cold glass of water to increase your energy levels.
Make a study timetable so that you’re not up all night trying to cram the whole term’s work into one hour. Find a place where you are able to study without getting distracted by your mom’s singing when she does the laundry. Try and make a study group with people who take the same subjects as you. That way, when you are unable to find help anywhere else the group can always give it a try.
Make studying fun.
Try and incorporate things that you enjoy and will motivate you. An example of this would be learning with sweets. This will motivate you to study faster to get more sweets. If you enjoy running. Swop out your music for voice notes of you studying.
Keen for a laugh?
Rent a comedy and spend some time with your ‘maats’. Laughing releases serotonin (the brain’s “feel-good” chemicals). Although this sounds very scientific, it is a very simple solution to your stressful situation.
We know that looking at a list of tips doesn’t exactly mean you’re going to get home and start a new chapter in your life. These things take time and dedication and you have to be willing to put in the effort. Sure it’s not an easy way out of studying. Trust the teenage generation of the modern era: if there was a quick and easy way to cram information, do you really think we wouldn’t have found it?
So we’re going to leave you with a quote to inspire, to motivate and to open your mind:
Get off your butt.
